Jesus once told a story about a man who had two sons. One son was defiant and rebellious wanting only what his father could give him, but wanting nothing to do with the father. The other son was hard-working and faithful, never failing to do all that his father asked. Through this story, that’s full twists and turns, we come to learn that each son misunderstands what it means to be a son. Each son defines their relationship with their father in their own terms. But by the end of the story they have their definition turned upside down and inside out.
The reason Jesus tells this story to us is because it’s about us. We are the sons in this story. We have the tendency to treat God in the exact same way. Which son are you? The younger? The older? Or, perhaps both?
